Your memories of Green Street?

....Well this will no doubt the title of a thread in about 6 months knowing this site.
It is strange to think that in 6 months we'll all be settled in our new seats at the OS and as Goldo puts it "proud to be West Ham"

Eddie B, sorry about that, the only real good memory I have was around 78 when a load of us got thrown out the Queens after about 11 pints when a game was called of for frozen pitch on a Boxing day.

Shows how times have changed but I remember going up with my late dad for a home game against Southampton all the way from Sussex via Victoria and then the District Line to Upton Park. Started walking up Green Street and were a tad confused at thousands walking the other way, until we heard that the game had been called off due to a frozen pitch.

Early 70's used to go with my brother about 12yrs more skinheads than coppers then, remember coming out of UP tube crossing the road walking towards the ground with the crowds and someone throwing a brick through the plate glass window of one of the locals grocery stores and a big cheer went up.
Another time we came out the tube and noticed a lone fan with an Everton scarf behind us walking out the tube and down green st, we stopped outside the queens to see how far he would make it down green st as we had never seen another fan attempt this. There were loads of big fellas drinking outside the queens and one gave his empty pint glass to one kid about 8yrs old in a group (under5s?) and told him to glass him. The kid was so small he had to take a run up and jump up to reach his head. The bloke was in shock with claret down his face and fell to the floor, when he realised what happened he got up took his scarf off and stuffed it inside his coat and carried on a few yards, then took a few more slaps for his trouble.
Then after Frankfurt night game, big fat German waving his huge flag all game in the stands appeared walking down green st infront of us with a few others going towards UP tube, still waving this flag. This wasn't going to end well, within a few seconds they disappeared, the flag and snapped pole were thrown into the air and nearly reached the sky....

percy ... can't remember... about half way down... was ideal going in the earlier days going with me old man to WH... they used to do us a nice bit of tucker before the game and a nice cup of splosh and some biccies after the game whilst the queues went down

Anyone remember the Hardware Store on the corner of Green St and Selsdon Rd I think it was called Derricks. It used to sell 2nd hand records in boxes outside.

As I lived in Upton Park Road (third on left past Plashet Road, heading north) my memories of Green Street extend beyond the football.
My Dad's other half Mum & Dad lived down that road.... ended up the only white family down there... retired and upped sticks to see out there last years on the Isle of Wight

Queuing for the tube in the pissing rain after beating Wimbledon 1-0 in the League Cup. We were held back so the away fans could get in first leading to the whole crowd singing "The Wombles of Wimbledon Common".
That bloke getting a hockey stick out of his car boot to take on the DofE.
Drinking in the Terry Spinks MBE the season we got relegated under Roeder.
Buying my Mum and Dad a crockery set "for best" as a Christmas present when I was a young lad. They still use it, despite it being some Willow Pattern copy from Mr Patel's Discount Fancy Goods Emporium.

Monto ,I remember Rita's, Odyssey's and Smarty Pants at the back of the Queen's Market.
Used to keep Armani jumpers and the Ellesse / Fila tracksuit tops in a safe out the back.
Got my first Tacchini from there too.
Remember getting my arse bitten by a police dog waiting for the Everton escort too. Jumped in someone's garden to get away from it.
Them Queen's Market bogs were not a place for a dump!!

Home game v Posh a few years ago I had already bought a ticket for someone who pulled out at the last minute. Before the game I had breakfast in Kens cafe, and I asked the manager bloke in if could sell my spare ticket for me. i dont know if he made anything on it, but he handed me the money after the game.
A nice touch to my day that was, and typical of Green Street in my (not much) experience.

As I lived in Upton Park Road (third on left past Plashet Road, heading north) my memories of Green Street extend beyond the football.
Our local traders - Pullen the butcher, Chaplin's (?) fish shop, the offy on the corner. Bob-a-Jobbing for Dick Henebry at The White Hart. Pie & Mash at the end of our road (Mudie's??). Cafe next to the bus garage. Late night hot dog from the van next to UP Stn on way home from somewhere west. Lots more. Wish I could remember all the names!
